Lighting Evaluation

As a group we chose the lounge on the second floor of the arts building. This room is primarily used for studying, reading, or to just take a break and relax. However, the lighting in this space is not very sufficient, we actually found the lighting to be kind of distracting. The track lighting created obscured views of the space as well as obscured the view of the objects in the space. The lighting creates unwanted shadows that make it hard to see when trying to do work. Since there are no windows in this space allowing very little to no natural light, we think that there should be a better artificial light source to allow proper working abilities. This lounge is primarily a public space, but is not very large, it is sort of a small, quiet space to get away.
As a whole we think the space is very boring. There isn’t enough seating or lounge space, keeping the space from being used to its fullest potential. The space feels cold and uninviting. The lighting in the space does not help the situation either, it’s primarily task lighting with cold light bulbs.

a place to bathe : broken barriers

Broken Barriers

Our assignment was
to design a place to bathe for people who are handicaped....

We first began by researching different types of ancient baths/rituals and how culture played a role in bathing. I instantly knew that I wanted to research further about bathing in Japan on top of what I already knew. From experience, I knew that their ways of bathing are drastically different than ours. In Japan, the actual bath tub is where you relax; people are expected to wash their bodies off thoroughly before entering the bath. "Onsen" is the word for hot springs in Japanese. It is known for the naturally heated water from the geothermally heated springs. Often, the virtues of the "hadakano tsukiai", which means naked communication are talked about. Onsens are often visited by people who want to get away from their crazy/hectic lives, and the virtue states that the time spent at an onsen can be used to get to know people in the relaxing and homey atmosphere by breaking all the barriers.

My design is focused on having a very open atmosphere while giving a relaxed feel.

object persuasion

For this assignment, "object persuasion", we had to design a magazine advertisement for the table we designed in "a place to dine". I mimicked the simple, clean cut form of my table through out the composition by using squares and a bold border along the top while keeping the ad looking as less complex as possible.

a place to bathe (research)

Japanese hot springs (onsen)

For the first time, I've decided to research something I was very familiar with. Visiting Japan has become a very frequent ritual for me after my dad moved there; and almost every time I visit, I get to have an amazing experience at the hot springs.

these are some notes I took about the hot springs...

urban pathways

For this assignment, "urban pathways", we were assigned to search or take a photograph of an urban pathway and recreate the composition in adobe illustrator.
